GENERAL OVERVIEW

The Valkyrie is designed to function in a multitude of environments as well as roles. To be capable in all the varied conditions the systems are designed with flexibility, versatility, and stability in mind.

During the Typhon Pact war, the Valkyrie proved to be suited well for all her intended roles. Against the Romulans new Snakehead fighter, the Valkyrie could out maneuver the larger Snakehead and keep constant fire on it until the target was destroyed. To help counter the Snakehead's heavier shielding, the Type-J phasers of the Valkyrie were replaced with the better Type-U+ pulse phasers. The additional power needs required an improvement to the fighter's fusion reactors and power couplings. The additional space meant the fighter could carry fewer micro-quantum torpedoes. In a fighter vs. fighter engagement, this change in weaponry was an improvement. In a fighter vs. starship engagement however it meant a drop in the damage the Valkyrie could deliver. Starfleet Command and the pilots both agreed, the change was for the better over all. With the fighter's upgrades, her production run was extended to 2399, and Starfleet Command is considering extending it even beyond that.

Combat Roles

Fighter vs. Fighter: Two twin phaser banks at the front of the craft give it a wide firing base and the targeting systems on the craft allow it to hit specific systems on larger ships. There are hardpoints on the wings for specific mission needs. However, the extra mass reduces the maneuverability of the craft.

Fighter vs. Starship: Speed and maneuverability are used to keep the starship's weapons at bay. The Valkyrie typically targets systems on board the bigger ship in able to gain an upper hand. The hard points can be outfitted with a munitions pod that can carry extra weapons such as additional micro torpedoes launchers.

Ground Support Role: The Valkyrie can use thrust vectoring to fly lower and slower to support the friendly ground forces. The hard points usually outfitted with ground attack munitions of a varied kind, depending on the mission and environment.

August: Starfleet issues a brief for a new class of Fighter. General brief is as follows. Numerous, small, well armed, maneuverable craft, able to mass together to attack a target from several different directions. Also able to support ground forces, and counter the new Scorpion Class Attack Fighters of the Romulans. A maximum of warp 4 is required.

September: ASDB release a general idea to Starfleet initially coded the Valkyrie Class. The Project is approved. Design work completed and prototype begins construction.

October: Basic space frame is laid out according to the design. Mini computer core installed. Micro Cochrane engine is designed and installed.

November: Warp engine is fitted, computer core is deemed operational and basic testing on the Fighter begins.

December: Ship passes all regulatory control and proceeds with testing.

January: Ship is proved to be operational and Starfleet examines the performance. The fighter is commissioned and Starfleet places an order for 400 Fighters to be distributed within the Federation.
